In the Philippines, it’s a trend for celebrities to venture into different aspects of show business such as acting, hosting, singing, and dancing, among others. They are required to provide entertainment to their followers so that their fame won’t fall short.
While some local celebs are really multi-talented, may it be in acting and singing, some aren’t but still try to not stick to their status quo and hone another skill. Randomly picking, Piolo Pascual, Sarah Geronimo, and Aiza Seguera are good actors and singers. They are just a few of personalities who can excel in more than one skill.
Meanwhile, in an episode of ASAP in 2015, ‘It Girls’ did a song (lip-sync) and dance performance—comprising Liza Soberano, Janella Salvador, Julia Barretto, and Kathryn Bernardo. Their costumes, props, and stage design were themed outer space. The group went ‘femme fatale’ as they point their fake nerf guns while singing “Break Free” by international sensation Ariana Grande.
What was supposed to be a great, lively performance drew flak from most of the netizens. Video of their complete enactment was uploaded by ABS-CBN Entertainment on its Youtube page, garnering 1,272,128 views. However, there were mostly dislikes than likes from online users.
As their performance was about to end, the ‘birit’ part was given to Kathryn. In case you’re not aware, Break Free has a high-note part before the final chorus. It was a little bit longer than 5 seconds, but Kathryn closed her lip even before the part ended.
One Youtube user commented: “Ay p arang tanga lang. Sorry ha but I just can’t help myself. Bakit pa nila binigay kay Kathryn yung mataas na part when they knew that this girl CANNOT SING THAT PART! It was Janella who can hit that note. Seriously. You call this entertainment? This is bullshit I say. Did you see the look on Kathryn’s face? It was TOO OBVIOUS that she’s faking it. Alam nyang hindi nya talaga kayang abutin yung note na yun. Darn it. This is why OPM is such a crap nowadays. Naka depend na lang sa popularity. Hindi sa talent. “
Another one said: “Um. She didn’t even hit the note. Falsetto nga lang gamit nila mostly, except janella kasi kaya niyang ibirit talaga. Nakakadisappoint lang kasi sobrang underrated niya tapos sobrang overshadowed. Nakakapikon kasi hindi siya nabibigyan ng attention. Oh well. I say the others should stick with acting but this performance sounded bearable due to the obvious heavy editing and auto tune.”
On Facebook, one netizen said: “Bes, hirap na nga sa pag-acting, hirap parin sa lip sync? Grabe na teh, wala mang tatlong braincells ang magsspark pag lip sync, kalurkey.’
Nonetheless, many supporters of Kathryn still defended her.

Another supporter said: “They are all pretty but I like Kathryn coz she so simple and classy though! Low profile pa rin sya khi sya ang pinakasikat sa lahat at di nag papa impress! Di lang sya maganda mabuting tao pa kaya maraming nagmamahal sa kanya!! Sana ganun din ang iba..stay that way lang kath and goodluck sa movie nyo ni DJ!”
